We all know that exercise is beneficial for out health. There is however, a correct way to exercise. To gain health benefits from exercise, it takes a balance of cardiovascular exercise, weight training and nutrition to have positive effects on your health. Not only that, but it takes “core” rehabilitation to improve spinal form and function that allows you to have greater gains in health and strength.
Many of you are on a lifelong search to make positive changes in your life and improve you heath, which is the true goal of fitness. It isn't stepping on a scale every morning or counting calories. Health is feeling good in your skin and taking steps to continually improve how you feel.
The first and easiest way to begin incorporating fitness into your life is walking. It is less stressful to the body as running or jogging, and just as beneficial, if not more. The American College of Sports Medicine recommends that for health that a minimum of 30 minutes of continuous moderate activity be done 3-5 times per week. To increase the benefits of exercise, it can help to incorporate bouts of 2-3 minutes of vigorous walking, followed by 2-3 minutes of moderate walking during the 30 minute period.
Strength training is also a very important part of exercise and health, however it must be done very strategically. Proper attention to you spine and posture needs to be taken when lifting any weights. For toning, it is not necessary to use heavy weights. Picking a weight that is challenging by 10-12 repetitions is ideal. Also, the type of exercises you chose to do is important as well. While many people like to use free weights, they are not the most ideal to start out with. Because many of us have compromised postures, starting out with free weights will only contribute to any imbalances we already have. Machines are the best way to start, with spinal supports. It is also critically important to begin core spinal rehabilitation exercises as part of your routine.
Our society today is hung up on what they understand as “core” exercise or rehabilitation. This is phrase is grossly misunderstood in the fitness world. When you look at the body, the core itself is the spinal system and the muscles and ligaments that support it. It is the system that protects the core of your body, the nervous system. It is way more then just your abs. To gain optimal fitness and function, as well as get your body to function properly to achieve your fitness goals, you need to not only workout in a classic sense, but you also need to incorporate “core” spinal exercises to restore function to the true core of the body.
